Allen's Hummingbird

Allen's Hummingbird
Allen's Hummingbird
I have many hummingbirds that visit the feeders I have in my garden. The most colorful of them are the tiny, but very feisty, Allen's hummingbirds.

These are migratory birds that spend the summers in the northern parts on North America, and winter over in Mexico. At least that's how it used to be. Not that many years ago I would not see these birds visit at all, but in the last 5 years they stop by on their migration, and in fact, some actually seem to now stay year round. I guess that's a reflection of our warming climate.

Allen's Hummingbird

These photos were all taken today in my backyard. All photos are of the same bird, an Allen's hummingbird. He is the "boss bird" when it comes to on of the four feeders I have in my garden. As you can see, from various angles, the color of his feathers change radically as the light is refracted differently. Don't be taken in by this cute little bird as he's very aggressive about defending his feeder. His report card reads: Does not play well with others or like to share.
