Spotted and Striped Tropical Fish
Unfortunately I haven't been able to identify this fish that I photographed at the Aquarium of the Pacific, Long Beach. All I can say is that it's both spotted and striped, and beautiful!

Bird of Paradise Flower

Bird of Paradise flower on black background with Orton effect. Someone told me this is "very 1980s - very colorful". I guess that means I need to do a contemporary version that isn't so colorful...? By the way, just in case you thought I took this photo with the flower on a black background with fancy lighting, that was not the case.  It took me about 90 minutes to isolate the flower from its background. Yes, I'm nuts, obsessive, whatever you want to label me. Go ahead!

Polynesian Guy with Turtle Tattoo #2

This is an updated version of this photo of a Polynesian guy with a turtle tattoo on his shoulder . On his arms is a traditional shark-tooth pattern tattoo. The earlier version of this photo has proven to be the most popular photo on my website for some reason; I guess people must just love looking at guys with tattoos or are looking for ideas or traditional Polynesian tattoos to copy. Polynesian turtle and shark tooth tattoo pattern This image is also cropped for 8x10 printing since someone recently contacted me about buying an 8x10 print. If you are interested in prints, let me know. I can provide prints in a range of sizes and papers. Here's an article that tells how traditional wood carving by Polynesian races evolved into the carving of the skin in what is now known as the tattooing: The Origins of Polynesian Tattooing .

Avocet Attacks Mallard Ducklings

Most of us have probably experienced some kind of aggressive bird behavior such as being bombed by a parent bird with a nest full of chicks. I guess it's good to know that birds don't just pick on us humans. In a recent visit to the San Joaquin Marsh in Irvine, CA, I captured this American Avocet dealing to some Mallard ducklings. I put the drama together in this video for your "enjoyment". Best viewed in "full screen" mode.

A Dose of Capybara Cuteness to Brighten Your Day

Sometimes the internet delivers a piece of pure, unexpected joy — and today, that joy comes in the form of a capybara ready for its ballet debut. Tutu Cute Capybara Known as the chillest animal on the planet, the capybara is famous for its serene demeanor and its uncanny ability to befriend just about every other creature. But what happens when this icon of calm decides to trade a quiet soak for a spirited pliĆ© ? You get this: a masterpiece of whimsy. This tutu-wearing trailblazer is a perfect reminder to embrace the silly, find your own rhythm, and dance like nobody's watching — even if you're a giant rodent built more for lounging than for leaping. So the next time you feel like you don't quite fit the mold, just remember this capybara. Put on your own proverbial pink tutu, whatever that may be, and let your happy spirit shine. Perhaps there's a little princess in yo...

The Farmers Queen Street Santa — An Auckland Christmas Icon

The Queen Street Santa is one of those pieces of Auckland Christmas iconography that's hard to explain to anyone who didn't grow up seeing it. Standing 18 metres tall, the statue's history is more layered than most people realise: it started life on the original Farmers building at the corner of Hobson and Wyndham Streets in 1960, moved briefly to the Manukau City Shopping Centre in the early '90s, then settled onto the Whitcoulls building on Queen Street, where it stood through the 1990s and 2000s — which is where I photographed it in January 2010, in the photo below. Farmers itself later moved back into that same Queen Street building in 2020, and the giant Santa went back up that Christmas along with them. As far as I can tell, though, it hasn't reappeared since — 2020 seems to be its last confirmed outing, which fits with what a lot of older Kiwis have told me: they remember it fondly, but suspect it's gone for good. The Farmers Santa — Queen St...
