If you know me, you know I love art with a sense of humour. And one of my best-selling designs right now is this "Sons of Arthritis — Ibuprofen Chapter" graphic on Redbubble. It's a playful tribute to the classic biker aesthetic, with a punchline anyone who's lived a few decades will instantly recognise.

Why Biker Parody Designs Work

The iconic motorcycle-club patch — the rocker, the centre logo, the chapter line at the bottom — is one of the most instantly recognisable visual languages in American pop culture. Whether you got it from Sons of Anarchy, from films like Easy Rider, or from spotting actual Harley-Davidson club patches in the wild, the shape is unmistakable. Which makes it perfect raw material for parody. Swap "Anarchy" for "Arthritis," swap "Sonoma Chapter" for "Ibuprofen Chapter," and the joke practically writes itself.

The whole genre of parody biker patches works because the original aesthetic is so confident, so unapologetic, so committed to its image, that any gentle subversion lands hard. Who I Made It For

Honestly? I made it for me, and for everyone like me. I'm at the age where I still feel like I could probably ride a motorcycle across the country — I just can't ride a bicycle to the corner store without thinking about my lower back afterwards. The kid who thought he was invincible is still in there, but he now consults with WebMD before doing anything physical.

This design is for anyone who:

  • Once owned a leather jacket and now owns a heating pad
  • Took up biker culture in college and now takes ibuprofen with breakfast
  • Has a friend or partner who refuses to admit they need reading glasses
  • Knows that a "warm-up" before yard work is now a non-negotiable

It pairs nicely with the rest of my Active Seniors collection — the skateboarding granny, the scooter-riding heart granny, the grandpa catching air on a board. Different art styles, same affectionate spirit. We're all in this getting-older thing together, and we might as well laugh about it.

Before and After: Two Joshua Tree Photographs, Two Painterly Reworkings

I want to try something a little different in this post — a working walk-through of how two of my Joshua Tree photographs from April of 2011 became two of my newest painterly artworks on Redbubble. Same compositions, same landscape, same afternoon in the Mojave. Very different final pieces. The Raw Photographs Both photographs were taken on a single afternoon trip to Joshua Tree National Park, shot in Canon raw (.CR2) format on my Canon EOS. Raw files are, as any photographer knows, deliberately flat — they carry the maximum amount of information the sensor recorded, without any of the punchy contrast, saturation, or sharpening that a JPEG would apply automatically in-camera. That flatness is a feature: it gives the photographer the widest possible latitude to make choices in post-processing.
