A Nation of Citizens, Not Subjects: Join the 'No Kings' Protest on October 18th

NO KINGS! Protest Sign

I’ve always believed that the most powerful ideas are often the simplest. Three hundred years ago, a revolutionary concept took hold: that we would be a nation of citizens, not subjects, governed by laws, not by rulers. The foundation of this country is built on the simple, powerful declaration that we would have "no kings."

That principle is as vital today as it ever has been. It’s a constant reminder that power is vested in the people, that leaders are accountable, and that no one is above the Constitution. It’s a call for vigilance, a rejection of authoritarianism, and a demand for a government that serves the many, not the few.

This is a time for us to raise our voices and reaffirm that fundamental promise. That's why I'm urging everyone who can to join the "No Kings" protest on Saturday, October 18th, in your area. It's our chance to stand together and show the world that the spirit of '76 is alive and well.

To help you make your voice seen as well as heard, I’ve been creating a series of protest banners and designs in my Redbubble store. The "No Kings" banner, with its vintage, revolutionary feel, was made for moments just like this.

Whether you need a banner, a shirt, or a sticker, carrying a clear message is a powerful way to contribute. Designs like "Due Process for All" and "Congress, Grow a Spine" are also available if they speak to your conscience. You can find the entire collection here: No Kings Protest Signs

Mark your calendars for October 18th. Let's stand together and remind those in power of the simple truth upon which this nation was built. I hope to see you there. Find a NO KINGS protest near you

Before and After: Two Joshua Tree Photographs, Two Painterly Reworkings

I want to try something a little different in this post — a working walk-through of how two of my Joshua Tree photographs from April of 2011 became two of my newest painterly artworks on Redbubble. Same compositions, same landscape, same afternoon in the Mojave. Very different final pieces. The Raw Photographs Both photographs were taken on a single afternoon trip to Joshua Tree National Park, shot in Canon raw (.CR2) format on my Canon EOS. Raw files are, as any photographer knows, deliberately flat — they carry the maximum amount of information the sensor recorded, without any of the punchy contrast, saturation, or sharpening that a JPEG would apply automatically in-camera. That flatness is a feature: it gives the photographer the widest possible latitude to make choices in post-processing. But it also means a raw file, straight out of the camera, doesn't look like the scene the eye remembers. It looks like the scene the sensor saw, drained of atmosphere. Here are the two r...
