Christmas Favorites from My Collection

My Christmas collection on Redbubble has grown to 54 pieces over the years, and counting — traditional and religious cards, a whole run of New Zealand Kiwi Christmas scenes, Southern California beach Santas, nutcrackers, sweater patterns, and more than a few Christmas pets. Rather than try to show all 54 in one post, here are eight favorites, starting with the one that outsold everything else in the shop last year, this snowman Christmas sweater mashup.

Classic Holiday Mashup Christmas sweater pattern design
Classic Holiday Mashup — Sweater Pattern

The best seller of the bunch, and it's easy to see why — a dense, cozy jumble of classic knitted-sweater motifs in red, green, and cream. The kind of pattern that looks equally at home on a card, a mug, or an actual sweater.

New Zealand Christmas design, Lock up your baubles, featuring a mischievous kea
New Zealand Christmas — Lock Up Your Baubles

Anyone who's spent a summer Christmas in New Zealand knows the kea's reputation — the world's only alpine parrot, and an incorrigible thief of anything shiny. This one's a warning label dressed up as a Christmas card.

Santa Surfs Venice Beach, a Southern California Christmas design
Santa Surfs Venice Beach — A SoCal Christmas

No snow, no sleigh, no reindeer — just Santa catching a wave along the boardwalk. For anyone who's traded a white Christmas for a California one and doesn't miss the shoveling.

Southern California Santa, sunshine and palms Christmas design
Southern California Santa — Sunshine, Palms, and Holiday Cheer

Palm trees standing in for pine trees, Santa's outfit instead of a snowsuit — this one leans fully into the SoCal version of the holiday rather than fighting it.

Traditional Christmas greeting card, Gloria in Excelsis Deo
Traditional Christmas Greeting Card — Gloria in Excelsis Deo

For the traditional side of the collection — a classic religious Christmas card built around the carol's opening line, for anyone who wants the season's older, quieter meaning on the front of the envelope.

Traditional Christmas Nutcrackers Soldier and King digital painting
Traditional Christmas Nutcrackers — Soldier and King

A pair of classic nutcrackers rendered with a painterly touch — rich reds and golds, the kind of piece that works as well framed on a wall as it does on a card.

A Puppy for Christmas, a Christmas greeting card design
A Puppy for Christmas!

Sometimes the best Christmas card is the simplest one — a puppy, a bow, and two excited children, and nothing else competing for attention.

Meri Kirihimete New Zealand flora Christmas wreath design
Meri Kirihimete — New Zealand Flora Christmas Wreath

A traditional wreath reimagined with New Zealand native flora, and "Meri Kirihimete" — Merry Christmas in Māori — at its center. A fitting close to the set: the whole season filtered through a Kiwi lens.

These eight are just a starting point — the full Christmas collection runs to 54 pieces (and counting) on Redbubble. You can find all my work at my Redbubble shop, KornKob Art — or search Redbubble for kornkobart (one word).

From Camera to Wall: Three Prints Hanging in My Home

Most of what I shoot ends up living on a screen — in a Redbubble listing, in a blog post like this one, in a folder I rarely revisit. But a handful of pieces earn their way onto my own walls, printed and framed, something I pass a dozen times a day without really looking at them, and then, every so often, I actually stop and look and admire my work. Here are three of my photographs that made it to the walls of my home. Fuchsia Flower — Sepia-Toned Botanical Photography My dad was a fuchsia enthusiast back in his day. I think he had something like 60 varieties spread over our half-acre property. In memory of him I grew one of the ones I remember he had ("Party Frock") in a hanging basket, so this one has a head start on sentiment before it even gets to the photograph. This is a double bloom, caught close enough that the ruffled petals go slightly soft at the edges, with the long pollen-tipped stamens doing what fuchsias do best — hanging there looking like they were...

Samoan Youth

This young man was preparing with his friends for his moment of fame on the stage at the Samoan Village at the Polynesian dance festival called Pasifika in Auckland in March this year. Samoan Youth Canon EOS 20D 1/30sec at f/20 ISO 200 Canon 70-300mm lens at 300mm More photographs from the same Pasifika Festival day can be found in my new post, Faces of Pasifika 2007 — A Day at Auckland's Pacific Festival .

A Favourite Landscape from New Zealand's Mackenzie Country

Mackenzie Country Barbed Wire Landscape — Golden Tussock, New Zealand I took this one in New Zealand's Mackenzie Country, a stretch of high country I don't remember precisely enough to pin to a single back road any more — this was long before cameras recorded GPS data, and the details of exactly where I was standing that day have faded. What hasn't faded is how much I still like the photograph itself. I framed the landscape through a rusted barbed wire fence that cuts diagonally across the frame, golden tussock grass rolling out behind it toward a mountain range, all of it sitting under a heavy, toned sky that gives the whole scene a moody, almost brooding quality. The Mackenzie Country takes its name from James Mackenzie, a sheep rustler who was captured in this same high country in 1855 after driving off around a thousand stolen sheep. He escaped custody more than once and became something of a folk hero in the retelling, and the basin and the pass through...

Leaning Tower of Pizza — A Pun Born on the Road to the Pisa Airport

I spent last week in the La Spezia/Cinque Terre region of Italy on a Road Scholar hiking trip — the kind of trip where your legs ache pleasantly every evening and you eat more focaccia than is strictly necessary. On the drive to the Pisa airport at the end of the week, someone mentioned we'd be flying out near the Leaning Tower, and it struck me: to my ear, "Pisa" sounds exactly like "pizza." I'm sure any actual Italian speaker would hear a clear difference, but mine apparently isn't tuned finely enough to catch it. The pun wrote itself from there. Leaning Tower of Pizza — Funny Food Pun Illustration Stacked pepperoni slices standing in for stone arches, mozzarella dripping like mortar between the levels, and the whole thing tilting at the same improbable angle as the real tower — built with AI assistance, once the idea had lodged itself firmly enough in my head that I had to see it through. Available on Redbubble Leaning Tower of ...

Six More Audubon Birds in Arts & Crafts Frames — Owls, an Extinct Pigeon, and a Mystery Eagle

Six more from the Audubon Arts & Crafts series — the Audubon plates, which are in the public domain, are c ourtesy of the John James Audubon Center at Mill Grove, Montgomery County Audubon Collection, and Zebra Publishing.  I framed them in new decorative Arts & Crafts borders. This batch turned up some of the more interesting historical footnotes so far: a genuine ornithological mystery, an extinct species, and a scientific name that's since been reassigned to an entirely different bird. Barred Owl — Audubon Arts & Crafts Bird Print Plate 46, No. 10. Common name unchanged, but Audubon's scientific name ( Strix nebulosa ) now belongs to the Great Gray Owl; the Barred Owl's correct modern name is Strix varia . Chestnut-Sided Warbler — Audubon Arts & Crafts Bird Print Plate 59, No. 12. Common name unchanged; modern scientific name is Setophaga pensylvanica . Great Horned Owl — Audubon Arts & Crafts Bird Print Plate 61, No...
