Upper Queen Street Corrugated Iron Verandas

Shop veranda printA waterfall of corrugated iron verandas cascades down Auckland’s Upper Queen Street in this shot.

Queen Street is Auckland’s historical “Main Street”, becoming the center of commerce and colonial life following European settlement of the town from 1840. At one time Queen Street was a mere dirt track running along a creek which was culverted under the street in the 1870s.

Contemporary residents of Auckland often scoff at the suggestion that Queen Street is Auckland’s “main street”, with the metropolis long fractured by suburban developments, shopping centers, and office parks. Today Queen Street is populated more by tourists exploring the “City of Sails” and the many international students, mostly from Asia, who study at the multitude of schools located close by.
