Hydrangea in a globeAnd now for something quite different! No, it's not a pizza! To get the full effect, you need to click on the image to view the larger image.

Making a globe shape in Photoshop is actually pretty easy. These are the steps:

  • Go to Filter > Distort > Polar Coordinates and click Polar to Rectangular
  • Go to Image > Rotate Canvas > Flip Vertical
  • Go to Filter > Polar Coodinates and this time choose Rectangular to Polar

Someone told me this is "very 1980s - very colorful". I guess that means I need to do a contemporary version that isn't so colorful...?

By the way, just in case you thought I took this photo with the flower on a black background with fancy lighting, that was not the case. Here's the original. It took me about 90 minutes to isolate the flower from its background. Yes, I'm nuts, obsessive, whatever you want to label me. Go ahead!

I'm pretty pleased with how this photo turned out. It almost looks like a tone-mapped HDR image, but it's not. I was able to uncover all these gold tones and the contrast in the clouds with Photoshop.

Here are other photos I took at Lake Cachuma.

Midnight Rose in the Rain AddThis Social Bookmark Button

Click to view larger photo of a purple rose in the rainWe were having a conversation at work not that long ago about purple. All the women at work love it and have clothes that feature purple, but I mostly don't like purple at all. I even went so far as to say that purple is a woman's color. And then a few days later I saw a piece in the LA Times that in fact studied color preferences by gender, and sure enough, purple is preferred by women over men. Anyhow, despite that, I really do like this purple rose.

The young black man in the photo was one of the staff at the museum. I'm interested in any constructive criticism you might have of this artwork. Please post your comments below. Thanks!

Click image to view larger Photo of Hoover Dam Parking Structure - Soft Light BlendThe Hoover Dam was conceived by Herbert Hoover while he was Secretary of Commerce in 1921 as a means of flood control and to provide Southern California with water. It wasn't until 1929 and after Hoover had bacame president that work on the dam was approved. Construction of the dam across Black Canyon was started in 1931 and took just 5 years to be completed by a Depression era workforce.

The hard rock in Black Canyon is of volcanic origin and known as "andesite breccia."

Golf Club at Terra Lago AddThis Social Bookmark Button

Click image for larger photo of the Golf Club at Terra Lago, CAIf you take a look at the photo on the website for the Golf Club at Terra Lago in Indio, CA, you'll see a different side than you see in this image. You might call this the "backside". The spot I took this photo from I think was meant to have houses built on it, but with the housing market downturn hitting the desert cities of the Cochella Valley hard, work on Terra Lago has been halted for now.

The thing that struck me as I wandered around here was how destructive we are of the environment. The desert landscape is levelled and grass planted. What was wild is tamed and groomed. Here you can see a bit of both worlds with the green grass of one of the greens, a shipping container acting as a workmen's shed but now abandoned and hidden from the view of the golfers and beyond the rugged desert landscape.

This is an HDR (high dynamic range) image in which I took three exposures each 2 f-stops apart but at the same apeture setting and then combined the three images.

Sunset at Crystal Cove #1 AddThis Social Bookmark Button

Sunset at Crystal Cove #1A group of us went for dinner at "The Beachcomber" at Crystal Cove last night, so I went a little early to catch the sunset which was at a couple of minutes before six. I am posting a series of the photos I took, with different coloring effects. I hope you like them all. This and the next one are "originals" that I haven't added color effects to.

Crystal Cove is famous around these parts because a small group of people had leases on land at the beach which recently went back to the State of California at the expiration of the leases. The State is in the process of renovating the cottages that had been built along the beach and the renovated ones are now available for rental. (See crystalcovebeachcottages.org for information). Dinner, by the way, was excellent, but a little pricey.

Crystal Cove is located between Corona del Mar and Laguna Beach on the southern coast of Orange County, California.

This photo was created using HDR (high dynamic range) technique.

Do Not Disconnect - The Real Digital Divide AddThis Social Bookmark Button

Photo expression of digital isolation the real digial divideDo you remember how a couple of years ago the expression "The Digital Divide" was in vogue? It referred to the "haves" and "have-nots" of the digital world, and especially with reference to those who didn't have access to the internet.

To me the real digital divide is actually the way modern technology isolates us from our communities, and none more so than "personal listening devices" which started with the Sony Walkman and Discman which were launched respectively in 1979 and 1984, which seems like prehistoric digital time. 1979 was actually the year that I started university, and they were hot, albeit expensive items, just like iPods, Zunes, and iPhones are today.

Living as I do these days in Southern California, I already feel the isolation that is imposed upon us by the car. But now it seems that even those who live in urban centers where there is mass transport isolate themselves willingly and voluntarily by means of their iPods and laptops.

As much as has been brought to us by means of "social networking" sites on the internet, it seems to me has been taken away by the other hand of technology. The isolation brought on by modern technology seems to be the "fly in the ointment", or should I say, the "fly on the iPod". When I see the message on the screen of my iPod that says "Do not disconnect" I try and hear it as a plaintiff voice from the "ghost in the machine", a voice that conveys the message that it is at the mercy of my hand reaching for the "off" switch.

The Narrows Gorge Zion National Park #1 AddThis Social Bookmark Button

Photo taken in The Narrows Gorge Zion National Park UtahI took this picture when I hiked The Narrows Gorge in Zion National Park. This was an awesome experience and the scenery was of course incredibly beautiful. The Narrows is known as a "slot gorge" because of it narrow width. This shot was taken at a point where the gorge is actually quite wide. At parts we had to hike through water that was up to our necks even though it was late summer. You have to be concerned about thunderstorms as they can cause the water level to rise fast. Keeping the camera out of the water was my main concern. The place where we rented out hiking gear had these cool hip bags for your camera that kept it dry.

If you ever do this or a similar hike, make sure you rent or buy the special boots that have grip on the slippery rock, and make sure you use a polel to help keep yourself upright, but expect to end up in the drink at least once nonetheless. Our entire party all fell into the water by the end of it. Take it as part of the experience, and the water's warm anyhow, at that time of the year at least.

Luna the Abyssinian Cat AddThis Social Bookmark Button

Luna the Abyssinian CatThis is my neighbor's Abyssinian cat, Luna. Obiviously I've had some Photoshop fun with this photo. I have a bit of a love/hate relationship with Luna as she sometimes comes into my yard and catches the hummingbirds at my feeder.

The Wikipedia entry on the Abyssinian cat says:
Abyssinians are very active, friendly, curious and playful, and almost dog-like, but are usually not "lap cats", being too preoccupied with exploring and playing as they would in their natural habitat. However, "abys" will also usually adopt one person in the household and become their best friend, often becoming a lap cat as they are extremely affectionate animals. They are "busy" cats, and can get bored and depressed without daily activity and attention. Many Abyssinians enjoy heights, and will explore their surroundings in three dimensions, from the floor to their owner's shoulders to the top of the highest furniture. They are highly intelligent, and very independent. There is a long haired version of the Abyssinian, called the Somali.
