Catlins Coastline

Photos of the sea and beaches of the Catlins coast, New Zealand

There is some 10,000 miles (16,000 km) of coastline in New Zealand, and in addition to the two major islands there are hundreds more. The coastline of the Catlins area in the south-eastern corner of the South Island has some spectacular examples of New Zealands crystal blue waters and exstensive deserted beaches.

Curio Bay is one of the most southern points of New Zealand's South Island and is famous for its Yellow Eyed Penguins. But alas, at the time we visited it was molting season, and the rarest penguins in the world are an even more rare sight at this time as they hide in the scrub against the cliffs awaiting their new cloak of feathers. As you can see, kelp grows prolifically along the shoreline. (beach-4651) Labels: beach, bull kelp, catlins, curio bay, kelp, new zealand, otago, sea
