In French, the word for cabbage, "chou", when combined with "petit" is used as a term of endearment that means something like "cutie pie" or "honey bunch", "sweetheart". The head of cabbage in my artwork is framed by the French, "Je t'aime, mon petit chou" which translates to "I love you, Sweetheart" (insert whatever loving nickname you have for the "cabbage" in your life. 🤣

So if you're thinking ahead and wondering what unique gift you could get for your "sweetie pie" this upcoming Valentines Day, how about a "Je t'aime, mon petit chou" t-shirt, mug, print, or even simply a greeting card for Valentines Day, or any of the other items available in my collection at Redbubble. The festival is a merging of pre-Columbian Aztec rites and the Catholic feast day of All Souls. The celebration of Halloween is closely related.

In addition to Mexico, festivals celebrating the Day of the Dead take place in many places across the U.S. The festival is characterized by sometimes elaborate altars (ofrendas) memorializing the deceased, with marigolds, colorful paper-cutouts (similar to Buddhist prayer flags), and photos and mementos of the deceased's favorite things, food and drink. Some elaborate ofrendas recreate events such as family gatherings around the dinner table, weddings, and the like.

I have put together a collection of digital art in celebration of the Day of the Dead. Each artwork is available in a wide array of merchandise, including clothing, mugs, laptop and iPad covers, etc. The collection can be viewed at Day of the Dead Merchandise Collection.

Day of the Dead Merchandise

35 locations for 2022 celebrations of the Day of the Dead in Los Angeles and Orange County
At least that's how it used to be. I got a trail camera from Amazon as I have always wondered what the creature was that engages in this nightly ritual in my backyard.
Here's the video compilation I put together using Adobe Lightroom. The trail camera I bought from Amazon is one of these Abask Trail Surveillance cameras.
I was just looking through my Lightroom catalog and came across this photo I took of the Grand Canyon 12 years ago. Sometimes it's just fun to play with old photos with the new tools we have since then. And that's what I did. The raw photo for quite poor because of the amount of haze in the canyon, but thanks to the new "Dehaze" feature in Lightroom I was able to effectively remove all the haze and produce a fairly nice shot into the Colorado River.
This plant California wildflower (anemopsis californica) grows in areas that get wet in the winter and can continue to grow even when completely submerged in water for periods. I came across this cluster of plants on a recent walk here in Irvine. The plants are growing in a local wash that passes through Mason Park. Common names are "Yerba Mansa" and "Lizard Tail".

Deceptively, what looks to be a flower, are actually bracts surrounding an inflorescence as explained in this Wikipedia posting:

Yerba mansa is showy in spring when in bloom. The iconic white "flowers" (actually reduced inflorescences, or pseudanthia) are borne in early spring, and are surrounded by 4–9 large white bracts.[4]Similar to the sunflower family, what appears to be a single bloom is in reality a dense cluster of individually small flowers borne in an inflorescence. In this species the inflorescence is conical and has five to ten large white bracts beneath it, so that along with the tiny white florets, the whole structure is quite striking when it blooms in spring. The conical structure develops into a single, tough fruit that can be carried downstream to spread the tiny, pepper-like seeds.

Mobile Apps for Editing RAW DNG Files

This is my third post about using mobile devices to take and edit photos in RAW format.
The first post explained what a RAW image file is and the advantages offered by RAW files over jpeg.

In my second post, I shared with you the names of the two mobile apps I use for taking pictures in RAW format with my Google Pixel XL phone.

Today I'm going to tell you how you can edit or process your raw files. As a photographer, I like to call it "developing my digital negatives in the digital darkroom".

If you read my first post in this series (What is RAW format photography), you may recall that when I was talking about jpeg photos I mentioned that the software in your camera or mobile device uses an algorithm that makes judgements about the image you are photographing and comes up with a file that is already an edited photograph.

Unlike a jpeg photo, this does not happen when you take a RAW photo. As a result, the RAW image often appears quite flat compared to a jpeg photo of the same scene. So you will typically want to edit your raw file before you share, publish, or print it.

All the judgements in this editing process are left up to you, which you should think of as a good thing since you are the photographer and artist! Don't panic, though, as today's editing software helps you greatly in making those judgements and automates many of the tasks for you, providing you with a good starting point before you apply your personal artist's brush.

Here's a sample to illustrate what I am talking about using a photo that I took in RAW format outside the Chinese Gardens at the Huntington Library in San Marino, California.

If you click on the first image you will see what the file looks like as the RAW photo "out of the box", so to speak. Go the second photo and compare it to the first. I made some very basic adjustments to the RAW file to produce the second file. For a start the sky was overexposed in the RAW file since at the time I took the photo the morning overcast was still burning off. After I adjusted the exposure, you could see that there was actually some blue sky under there.

I also brought more light to the areas of shadow in the picture, which you can see in the dark gray roofing tiles in the top right of the photo and also in the detail of the landscaping in the center foreground.

You'll also notice that the greens and yellows are much move lively

These adjustments took me less than a minute using Adobe Lightroom on my laptop.

The first app I would recommend is an app called Snapseed which is hot off the press from Google, released not all that long ago. It's from Google, so of course it's free. It is also mind-blowingly powerful and feature rich. It puts at your fingertips all the functionality you get from advanced photo-editing software such as Lightroom in addition to a delivered set of "filters" that are customary in many photo editing apps. I'm very impressed with what Google has given us! Look out, Adobe!

I mentioned in my previous post that the Adobe Lightroom mobile app allows you to take photos in RAW format, however, unless you have an Adobe subscription, you can't actually edit the RAW files from the mobile app; all you can do is organize and share them in their "raw" unedited state.

A monthly $9.99 subscription to Adobe's Creative Cloud like I have brings you the following advantages:

Desktop versions of Adobe Photoshop and Lightroom. Automatic updating ensures what you are using is always at the highest release of each application.

In-app editing of your DNG files on your mobile device.

Automated syncing through your "Adobe Creative Cloud" account from your mobile device to your desktop Lightroom catalog. I love this feature as I prefer to edit my files from my laptop version of Lightroom.

Online storage of your photos in your Creative Cloud account.

It's still early days for taking and editing RAW photos on mobile devices, but thanks to Google adopting the DNG open-source format for RAW files in its applications, and publishing its Snapseed editing tool, we are off to a very good start. Well, that's it for now. I hope you have found this series helpful and informative.
Two Apps for Taking Photos in RAW DNG Format

Following on from yesterday's post (What is RAW photography format?), today I am going to share with you some ways you can take RAW DNG (digital negative) files using an Android device such as a smartphone or tablet. Currently I am using a Google Pixel XL smartphone running on Android 7.1.1 (Nougat).

If you haven't yet read yesterday's post, I recommend that you take the time to do so to give you an understanding of the advantages of taking your photos in RAW format.

Android Apps that allow you to take photos in RAW format

Currently, these are the two apps I use on my Google Pixel XL that allow the option to shoot photos in RAW format. Both of them use the DNG (digital negative) open source file format that I spoke about yesterday.

Open Camera by Mark Harman

Open Camera Android App allows you to take photos in RAW (DNG) format

This app is free, but donations are appreciated by the developer. This is a fantastic app that not only allows you to take photos in DNG format, but also has the option to shoot bracketed photos for HDR images. I made a donation soon after I installed this app once I had used it for a few days as I believe the developer deserves to be rewarded for his great work and to incentivize him to continue to enhance the app and deal with any bugs that may be uncovered.

After you install the app, you will need to adjust your settings as the default is to shoot in jpeg. To specify taking pictures in RAW format, start the app and then touch the settings icon (the gear icon). Then go to Photo Settings and then touch RAW and choose "JPEG and DNG". When you take a photo from now on you will get both a DNG file and jpeg file which is useful for quick sharing to your social networks if you wish.

Note that under the Photo Settings you will also find where you can specify exposure bracketing for taking HDR images if you are interested in that.

Additionally under Photo Settings, you can modify the settings for image quality. Note that these only apply to the jpeg files, not the DNG file. A BIG plus with owning a Google Pixel phone is that you get unlimited storage for full-size photos and videos from Google Photos, so I have all my settings at the highest quality settings since I never have to worry about exceeding any storage limit for my files.

Note that if you are considering getting a Google Pixel phone that they are unlocked phones, so you can buy them from Amazon and just need to get a sim card for your particular carrier for it to work on their network. If you wish to buy one through your carrier, the only carrier in the U.S. who has them is Verizon and they are sold unbranded and unlocked under the conditions of their agreement with Google.

Note: As far as I can determine, at the time of writing the Open Camera app is not available for Apple devices.

Adobe Lightroom Mobile for Android (Also available for Apple devices in the Apple App Store)

Adobe Lightroom Mobile

Adobe Lightroom Mobile by Adobe Systems is also a free app that allows you to take photos in DNG format. However, the free version only allows to to take, organize, and share your photos. To be able to edit them, you need a subscription to Adobe's Creative Cloud service. This service also allows you to sync all the photos you take with Lightroom Mobile with your desktop version of Lightroom. More about that in my next post.

I find the best way to understand RAW format photography is to liken it to its equivalent in film photography. You can think of a RAW format file as the equivalent of the negative in the world of film photography.

Film photographers expose their photograph onto a light-sensitive filmstrip or plate and then develop that into a negative. Using various processes and adjustments, the negative can then be printed multiple times and in different ways, resulting in a variety of photographic prints.

In the realm of digital photography, the RAW file is the equivalent of the image stored on the film. Just like with a film negative, from the one RAW file, many different images can be rendered in the "post-processing" of the "digital darkroom". No matter how many different treatments the original negative (RAW file) is given, the RAW file is always available intact in its original state from which you can start from scratch again.

The other option in the modern digital photography world is to take your photos in jpeg format. The jpeg file can be compared to a developed print in the world of film photography. When you take a photo in jpeg format, your camera makes its own judgements about how the final print should look using what's known as an "algorithm" executed by the software in your camera or mobile phone. Essentially the software acts as developer and post-processor and comes up with a "print" for you. The "negative" of the original image with all its "raw" information is not retained.

The jpeg file is also compressed, meaning after the algorithm is executed and the "print" file is finalized, some of the data is discarded in the interests of creating a smaller file. This technology was developed in the early days of computing and the internet, when smaller files were preferred because of the cost of storage and the narrow bandwidth of the internet in the days of internet "dial-up modems".

So the advantages of a RAW file over a jpeg file are:

The file is not compressed; none of the information necessary to create the image from the RAW file is discarded. In fact, the RAW file is not really an image at all, but a file containing all of the information necessary to generate an image.

Secondly, the metadata of the RAW file can be adjusted in "the digital darkroom" in a non-destructive manner, which means that at any time, you can go back and 'reset' any adjustments you have made and return to the original RAW file.

The final judgements of how the image and print file should be rendered are left to the photographer, and not to a software algorithm.

Each camera maker has their own proprietary RAW file format. For example, Canon's RAW format files use CRW as the file extension. Nikon uses NEF. To be able to read the file and render it as an image you need to use software that has a converter or plug-in that can read and render the RAW file. The most-widely known examples of such software are Adobe Photoshop and Adobe Lightroom.

However, the trend is now to use a common RAW file format that has long been advocated by Adobe, known as the "digital negative" RAW file format. Such files use DNG as their file extension. This is an "open source" format. Recently, Google adopted DNG as its standard for RAW format files for devices using the Android operating system, a move that should give considerable impetus to the adoption of this common format by all camera makers.

Hopefully I have been able to answer your question as to what RAW format photography is all about. In my next post I will tell you how you can take DNG photos using an Android phone and also how to process the file with some apps for Android phones. See you then!
